HOW TO PREVENT METHANOL POISONING

According to the Poison Control Center at Bach Mai Hospital, since late February 2023, workers at HSTECH Vina Co., Ltd.—an electronics manufacturing company—began reporting fatigue, headaches, and vision issues after working in an area where ethanol alcohol was sprayed to cool cutting blades and used for manual cleaning of metal parts. Tragically, two workers died from methanol poisoning, with blood methanol levels reaching 123.16 mg/dL. Symptoms included coma, hypotension, severe metabolic acidosis, blurred vision, and respiratory distress. Many others suffered from brain swelling and permanent eye damage.

Testing revealed that the alcohol used contained 77.83% methanol and no ethanol. Workers were exposed primarily through inhalation of methanol vapors and possibly through direct skin contact.

Control and verify the quality of alcohol before use — methanol contamination is a fatal risk.
